The Longhorns fell behind early but used solid relief pitching and 13 hits to earn the series win.
AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Baseball came from behind on Sunday afternoon to take down Oklahoma State by a 10-5 final at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The victory gave the Longhorns (15-10, 5-1 Big 12) their second straight Big 12 Conference series win to open league play.
Oklahoma State (11-10-1, 1-2) jumped out to an early lead, picking up a pair of runs in the second inning off Chase Shugart.
In the bottom of the inning, the Longhorns cut their deficit in half. David Hamilton, who finished 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, two RBI, and two steals on the day, singled to lead off the inning. After a walk to Zach Zubia and a DJ Petrinsky bunt single loaded the bases, Tate Shaw lifted a sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-1.
Oklahoma State then loaded the bases with no outs and managed a run off of Shugart, but the junior limited the damage and the Longhorns trailed by two after three innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Texas bats came alive off of Oklahoma State starter Carson Teel (3-1). With one out, Shaw tripled to right-center to start things off. With two away in the frame, Texas did its damage. Kody Clemens followed with an RBI double down the line to make it 3-2 before Ryan Reynolds roped a single to right field to tie the game at 3-3. Masen Hibbeler then came through with the Longhorns' second triple of the inning to plate the go-ahead run, giving Texas a 4-3 advantage.
The Longhorns would never relinquish the lead as Bryce Elder (4-1) was magnificent for four innings of relief. The freshman scattered four hits and walk while striking out five to keep the Longhorns in the game long enough to break things open in the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Reynolds came through once again, this time with an RBI double to make it 5-3. After Hibbeler added an infield single and both runners moved into scoring position on a balk, David Hamilton ripped a single to right-center to score two and give the Longhorns a 7-3 advantage. Then, with the bases loaded, senior Jake McKenzie singled through the left side to plate two and put the Longhorns out in front, 9-3.
Oklahoma State got a pair back in the top of the eighth off Josh Sawyer, but Kody Clemens launched his league-best seventh homer of the season in the bottom half to give Texas a decisive 10-5 lead.
Clemens finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, a homer, a double, and two runs scored. Reynolds, Hibbeler, Hamilton and Petrinsky each finished with two hits apiece in the game.
Texas returns to action on Tuesday night when it heads to San Marcos to take on Texas State. The Longhorns then hit the road again for a Thursday, Friday, Saturday Big 12 Conference series at Kansas State.
