Baseball downs Texas State, 6-1, on rainy Tuesday night

David Hamilton, a San Marcos native, hit his first career home run in the ballgame.
SAN MARCOS, Texas—Sophomore David Hamilton homered for the first time in his career and Texas pitchers quieted the Texas State bats en route to a 6-1 win over the Bobcats on a rainy Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
Freshman Nico O'Donnell (2-1) started on the hill for the Longhorns (16-1) and, after a rocky but scoreless first inning, finished with three shutout frames against the Bobcats (14-9-1), facing the minimum over his final two innings of work.
In the top of the fourth, the Longhorns offense got to Texas State starter Wes Engel. Duke Ellis was hit with a pitch to open the frame and moved to second on a balk. With one out, Ryan Reynolds was hit with a pitch to give the Longhorns two on. First baseman Masen Hibbeler followed with a single through the left side to plate Ellis and give Texas the 1-0 lead.
Hamilton, a San Marcos native, then singled to third base to load the bases with one away and designated hitter Zach Zubia worked a walk to force home the run and put Texas up, 2-0. Austin Todd followed with a run-scoring groundout and Texas lead, 3-0, after three-and-a-half.
In the bottom of the fourth, Parker Joe Robinson tossed a 1-2-3 inning. Tate Shaw was hit with another pitch—he was hit three times on the night—to open the fifth but with one out, the tarp was pulled onto the field and the teams settled into a rain delay.
When play resumed, Matteo Bocchi entered and pitched two scoreless innings. In the seventh, Kamron Fields came on and tossed a perfect frame.
In the eighth, Texas tacked onto its lead thanks to a two-run homer from Hamilton. The homer was the first of Hamilton's career and it pushed Texas out to a 5-0 lead.
The Longhorns added one more in the top of the ninth thanks to a Ryan Reynolds RBI single. The Bobcats got one on the board in the bottom half but that would be all as Beau Ridgeway closed things out for the 6-1 win.
The Longhorns return to the road for a three game set beginning on Thursday at Kansas State.
