No. 4 Baseball completes sweep of Kansas State
04.11.2021 | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas – Ivan Melendez hit a pair of two-run home runs to lead No. 4 Texas Baseball to a 9-2 win over Kansas State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon. Melendez has homered in a program-record six consecutive games, with seven total home runs over that stretch.
Kolby Kubichek (4-2) was solid on the hill, earning the win after pitching a career-high seven innings, allowing seven hits, one walk, one unearned run and striking out five.
Texas (25-8, 10-2) got the scoring started in the third, plating a pair of runs to give the Longhorns an early 2-0 lead. With one out, Trey Faltine hit a sharp line drive down the third-base line that was corralled by the third baseman for an infield single. Mike Antico followed with a two-run home run to left-center to get the Longhorns on the board.
Kansas State (17-14, 2-7) responded in the fourth inning, getting a run back with a solo shot to left field, cutting the Texas advantage to 2-1.
In the Texas fourth, Cam Williams got on board with a one-out walk, setting the stage for Melendez. Three pitches later, Melendez crushed a home run over the top of the monster in dead center field to put the Longhorns up, 4-1.
The Wildcats picked up an unearned run in the sixth, trimming the Texas lead to 4-2 after a couple of Longhorn errors allowed a run to come home.
Melendez made it 6-2 Texas in the sixth with his second home run of the game. With Silas Ardoin on first courtesy of a walk, Melendez stepped in and hammered an 0-1 pitch off the top of the scoreboard in left-center.
The Longhorns added three more runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach at 9-2. Zach Zubia singled to third and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Melendez was intentionally walked, then he and Zubia moved up a base after another wild pitch. Douglas Hodo III drove them home with a base hit to short and ended up at second after a throwing error. Eric Kennedy followed with a single up the middle to bring home Hodo.
Pete Hansen and Aaron Nixon each pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen to close out the game.
Texas has won six consecutive conference games and eight straight overall. It is the Longhorns' first three-game sweep of K-State since 2017 and the 10th overall, including seven times in Austin.
Texas will be back in action on Tuesday with the start of a two-game series against Nevada. First pitch at UFCU Disch-Falk Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
