AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Texas Baseball beat Nevada, 4-3, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night. The Longhorns have won a season-best nine consecutive games to improve to 26-8 this season.
Tanner Witt (2-0) picked up the win in relief after a stellar outing, striking out five batters and allowing two hits and one run in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Texas got the scoring started in the bottom of the second, plating a run to take an early 1-0 lead. Silas Ardoin led off the frame with a walk and Ivan Melendez reached after being hit by a pitch to set the stage for Eric Kennedy, who smoked a two-out single through the right side to score Ardoin.
The Longhorns added two more runs in the third to extend the lead to 3-0. Zach Zubia drew a two-out walk, his sixth-straight game with a base on balls, and Ardoin followed with his second walk of the game. Melendez stepped in and drove the first pitch he saw into right field to plate both runners.
Nevada (10-14) cut into the Texas lead in the fourth, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly, then added another one in the fifth after a walk, a double and an infield single brought a run across to make it 3-2.
Witt entered with one out in the fifth and the Wolf Pack threatening to add more but closed out the inning with a flyout to left and a three-pitch strikeout.
A hit batter and a pair of base hits enabled Texas to get one of the runs back in their half of the fifth. Zubia was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Ardoin and Melendez followed with back-to-back singles through the left side to load the bases. Cam Williams grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home Zubia and increase the Texas lead to 4-2.
Nevada picked up a run in the eighth with a single and a triple to cut the lead to 4-3.
Starter Justin Eckhardt pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits and a walk. Cole Quintanilla pitched a scoreless eighth, while Aaron Nixon picked up his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Melendez and Kennedy each had two-hit nights, while Ardoin went 1-for-1 with a single, three walks and two runs scored.
Texas and Nevada will close out the two-game series on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
