THE MATCHUP—Texas and Nevada will meet for a two-game series beginning on Tuesday. The programs have only one previous meeting, with the Longhorns winning 16-6 during the 1994 NCAA Central Regional held in Austin. The game attendance of 7,825 is the eighth-largest crowd in UFCU Disch-Falk Field history.
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—Texas won five games last week, including a three-game sweep of Big 12 foe Kansas State, pushing the Longhorns winning streak to eight games. The Longhorn offense was on a tear last week, scoring 60 runs over the five games, including 37 against K-State, Texas' most runs in a three-game series since outscoring UT Pan American 39-0 in 2002. The 37 runs against K-State tied the program record for runs in a three-game Big 12 Conference series, a mark previously set against Missouri in 1999. Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (14-4) and Stephen F. Austin (9-1) earlier in the week, the Longhorns hit five home runs and drew 23 walks, registering more runs than hits in each game. Texas is 25-5 over its last 30 games and has won seven-straight series, including the first four in the conference this season.
MAKING A BIG IMPRESSION—Ivan Melendez is on a tear that has never been seen on the Forty Acres. The Big 12 Player of the Week has homered in a program-record six consecutive games, with seven total home runs during the streak. In the month of April, he is hitting .581 with five doubles, seven home runs, 18 RBI and 13 runs scored. In that span, he has a .649 on-base percentage and 1.419 slugging percentage for an OPS of 2.068. For the season, Melendez leads the Longhorns with a .375 batting average and 30 RBI and is tied for the team lead with eight home runs. He also leads the team in on-base percentage (.451), slugging percentage (.739), OPS (1.190) and total bases (65), sitting second in hits (33) and tied for second in doubles (8).
QUICKER THAN QUICK—Mike Antico leads the Big 12 Conference and is 10th nationally with 16 stolen bases. Eric Kennedy is right behind him with 14 steals to rank second in the conference and 17th in the nation. As a team, the Longhorns have swiped 45 bases, which is second in the conference and ranks 14th in the nation. Additionally, Kennedy uses his speed regularly to get on base with 16 infield singles, including eight bunt hits this season. In his career he has 40 infield hits (20 bunts).
FLASHING THE LEATHER—Trey Faltine has been a human highlight reel this season, making the difficult look routine. The Longhorns shortstop leads the Big 12 with 104 assists and is tied for 12th with 14 double plays while sporting a .967 fielding percentage in 153 chances.
DALY GETTING IT DONE—Mitchell Daly has been on a tear at the plate, hitting safely in 18 of the last 22 games. He has six multi-hit games in the last 15, raising his batting average to .369, a 63-point increase over that span. Daly ranks sixth in the Big 12 Conference in batting average and 15th in on-base percentage (.438). The freshman currently ranks second on the squad in batting average and on-base percentage, fourth in hits (31), slugging percentage (.476) and OPS (.914), and sixth in doubles (6) and total bases (40).
HAMMER KEEPS HAMMERING—Cam Williams crushed his eighth home run of the season in Texas' 14-4 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Tuesday. Williams is currently tied for the team lead in home runs and doubles (9) and ranks second in total bases (61) and slugging percentage (.560), while sitting third in OPS (.922) and fourth in RBI (26). Williams' eight home runs are tied for fifth in the Big 12 Conference and rank 50th nationally. His nine doubles are tied for sixth in the Big 12 and his 61 total bases are tied for 13th.
