No. 22 Baseball beats Sam Houston 9-2

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 22 Texas Baseball scored seven runs in the first inning and rolled to a 9-2 win over Sam Houston on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Zane Morehouse pitched five innings and allowed just one run on four hits. He struck out five batters and improved to 3-0 on the season.
Ivan Melendez went 2-for-5, hitting his 26th homer of the season and drove in four runs. Douglas Hodo III, Austin Todd and Skyler Messinger also had two hits apiece.
The Longhorns (36-17) jumped all over the Bearkats with seven runs on six hits and batting around in the bottom of the first inning. The game started with singles by Hodo and Todd before Melendez launched his 26th homer of the season. Murphy Stehly then launched his 15th homer, which marked the fourth time this season for Melendez and Stehly to hit back-to-back homers.
After Silas Ardoin reached on an error and Messinger singled, Trey Faltine drove in another run with an RBI double to right-center. Dylan Campbell followed with a sacrifice fly and Eric Kennedy capped the inning with an RBI groundout to make the score 7-0.
The Bearkats got on the board in the fourth inning with a two-out RBI double to trim the Longhorns' lead to 7-1.
The Longhorns added two runs to the lead in the sixth to go up 9-1. Campbell and Mitchell Daly hit back-to-back doubles to drive in the first run of the inning. With the bases loaded, Melendez then drove in his fourth RBI of the game with an RBI groundout.
Sam Houston got another run in the seventh to make the score 9-2. Luke Harrison was called in out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
Out of the bullpen for Texas, Jared Southard, Marcus Olivarez and Tristan Stevens all pitched scoreless innings.
The Longhorns will close out the regular season this weekend against Kansas with the series starting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
