The Longhorns trailed 7-2 before storming back and winning 9-8 on a Dylan Campbell walk off.
GREENVILLE, N.C. – No. 9 Texas Baseball rallied from a five-run deficit and won 9-8 on a walk-off hit in the ninth inning over No. 8 East Carolina on Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium in the NCAA Greenville Super Regional.
The Longhorns (46-20) and Pirates will play a winner take all Game 3 on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
Dylan Campbell went 3-for-5, including the bases-loaded walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. He also hit a go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Texas trailed 7-4 going into the bottom of the eighth inning and put up a four-run frame to take an 8-7 lead. Murph Stehly and Austin Todd both singled before Skyler Messinger hit a game-tying three run homer to right field. After a pitching change, Campbell hit his go-ahead blast to right field.
ECU scored a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game up 8-8 to set up more heroics from Campbell. Ivan Melendez started the inning with a single before walks to Todd and Silas Ardoin loaded the bases with two outs. Campbell then stepped up and hammered a ball down the right field line to end the game.
Andre Duplantier II pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief and allowed just one run on two hits, while striking out three. He picked up the win and improved his record to 3-1 this season.
Douglas Hodo III and Eric Kennedy each had three hits in the game, with one of Hodo's being a two-run homer.
Murphy Stehly went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. With the two hits, Stehly became the first Longhorn with 100 hits since Seth Johnston's 115 in 2005.
Texas was down 7-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Trey Faltine hit a double to deep left field and Hodo followed with a two-run homer to make the score 7-4 and set up the late inning drama.
For the second-straight day, Texas got two runs across in the first inning to grab an early lead. Kennedy singled and stole second base before Stehly drove him in with a two-out RBI single. Stehly stole second base and then came around to score the second run on an errant throw.
East Carolina got a run across in the fourth inning on a solo homer. Starting pitcher Lucas Gordon got into some trouble after the homer but was able to get out of the inning with the 2-1 lead intact.
The Pirates blew the game open with a five-run fifth inning to pull ahead 6-2. Gordon gave up a two-run double for the go-ahead runs and Marcus Olivarez was greeted out of the bullpen with a three-run homer.
ECU tacked on another run in the seventh, scoring a run on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 7-2.
