Junior Lindsey Stephens hits second grand slam in two days to power Longhorns offense
TEMPE, Ariz. – Despite banging out 10 hits and getting the second grand slam in two days from junior center fielder Lindsey Stephens, Texas' (2-2) late rally came up just short as the Longhorns dropped a 10-9 decision to Stanford (3-2) on Saturday night at the Kajikawa Classic.
Stephens' blast was her team-leading second of the season and the fourth grand slam of her career on the Forty Acres. Sophomore left fielder Stephanie Wong contributed a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored, a stolen base and two RBIs, junior third baseman Erin Shireman was 2-for-4 with a tally and a RBI and both junior second baseman Stephanie Ceo and sophomore Mickenzi Krpec (1-for-2) added single RBIs. Junior first baseman Holly Kern (1-for-3) came within feet of tying the game during the bottom of the sixth, but her potential HR ball was caught as a SU fielder crashed through the temporary fencing.
In the circle for the Horns, Texas freshman Erica Wright (1-1) took the loss in relief after allowing three unearned runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts over 2.2 frames.
Stanford wasted no time roaring to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first as SU got back-to-back long balls from right fielder Bessie Noll and first baseman Kayla Bonstrom.
Texas began its comeback starting the bottom of the second as sophomore pitcher Tiarra Davis drew a lead-off walk off Stanford starter Madi Schreyer. With one down, senior right fielder Marlee Gabaldon hit a sharp bouncer back to the circle that was thrown very high of first for an error. Freshman catcher Randel Leahy followed with her first collegiate hit on a chopper to short and suddenly the bases were packed full of Longhorns.
That set the stage for Ceo who battled hard to draw a bases loaded walk to force in Texas' first run of the contest. After a two-out Wong free pass brought across another tally, Stephens stepped to the dish and hammered her second grand slam in two days over the right center field wall as the Burnt Orange & White took a 6-3 lead. The outburst continued soon after as consecutive hits by Davis and junior first baseman Holly Kern were cashed in via a RBI single off the bat of Shireman. The inning finally came to an end moments later, but not before the Longhorns had put up seven runs on five hits while sending 12 batters to the plate in nabbing a 7-3 advantage.
Stanford answered right back in the top of the third as the SU offense utilized a pair of two-RBI singles from shortstop Kylie Sorenson and second baseman Lauren Bertoy to dead-lock things at seven-all.
The Cardinal expanded their advantage further in the top of the fourth as a sacrifice fly and a two-RBI single off Bertoy's bat restored the Stanford lead to three tallies at 10-7.
The offensive fireworks continued unabated into Texas' half of the fourth. A lead-off Wong single and a Kern walk set the stage for pinch hitter Krpec. The sophomore stepped into the batter's box and promptly ripped a RBI base knock through the middle to make it 10-8.
With Longhorns stationed at the corners and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Wong delivered a clutch RBI single plating Gabaldon as UT clawed back within a single run.
Texas' Kern came within mere feet of tying the game in the bottom of the sixth, but her long blast to center was caught by Cassandra Roulund as she crashed through the temporary fencing.
Sophomore shortstop Devon Tunning gave the Longhorns hope of yet another walk-off in the bottom of the seventh by drawing a two-out walk. That brought up Wong, and she gave a ball a solid ride to left center. Unfortunately, it wouldn't carry far enough as the drive was caught just short of the wall to finalize Stanford's 10-9 triumph.
