No. 23 Baseball Routs UNLV in Augie Garrido's 800th win at Texas
02.20.2016 | Baseball
The Longhorns defeated the Rebels, 11-2, on Saturday afternoon.
AUSTIN, Texas—Win No. 1 was also win No. 800 today at UFCU Disch-Falk Field as Texas Baseball's first win of the 2016 campaign—an 11-2 rout of UNLV—gave Augie Garrido his 800th victory as head coach of the Longhorns.
Led by three-hit games from center fielder Zane Gurwitz and shortstop Bret Boswell, every Texas starter found his way across home plate at some point during the 11-run offensive outburst.
Texas plated three runs in the first inning on three hits and two costly UNLV errors. After Gurwitz and Boswell led off the inning with a pair of singles, Patrick Mathis advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and designated hitter Tres Barrera singled to the shortstop, who threw it away. Catcher Michael Cantu followed with a rope to left that the UNLV outfielder couldn't handle, allowing Boswell and Barrera to score.
The three runs would be enough for Longhorns starter Ty Culbreth who allowed just four hits, a walk and a solo homer in five innings of work. The lefty struck out four on the afternoon and earned his first win of the season.
While the three runs would have been enough for Culbreth, the Longhorns offense had much more in store. With the bases loaded in the second, it was Barrera again who did the damage. This time, the junior's patience was rewarded as he walked to force in the fourth Texas run.
UNLV picked up its first run in the top half of the fourth but the Longhorns quickly responded. Gurwitz hit a leadoff triple to open it and scored when an errant throw took the ball into the dugout and out of play. Texas added one more in the inning to push its lead to 6-1.
In the seventh, freshman Tyler Rand continued his production with a two-out bases-loaded single. A defensive mishap from the Rebels allowed for a third run to score in the inning, giving the Longhorns a 9-2 lead.
Texas closed out its offensive performance with a resounding eighth inning. Mathis led off the frame and drove a 3-2 pitch 408 feet for his first collegiate home run and the Longhorns' first deep fly of the season. Michael Cantu followed with a double and came around to score on a Kody Clemens single to finish the game's scoring.
Aside from Culbreth, freshman Beau Ridgeway, junior Jon Malmin and freshman Nolan Kingham provided strong outings out of the bullpen.
The Longhorns and Rebels return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the series finale. The rubber match will see righties Connor Mayes and Ben Wright face off on the mound.
