The win gave the Longhorns the series victory over the Rebels, two games to one.
AUSTIN, Texas—The No. 23 Texas baseball team pounded out double-digit hits for the second straight game and kept UNLV off the board for the entire afternoon en route to a 7-0 shutout win in the series finale at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday.
Sophomore Patrick Mathis picked up where he left off on Saturday, taking the first pitch he saw over the fence in left. The opposite field blast gave the Longhorns a 1-0 lead and the offense would not look back.
Texas put up a crooked number in the home half of the second inning when, after a Michael Cantu walk and a Kacy Clemens sacrifice bunt, freshman Kody Clemens ripped a single to right center, scoring the DH from second base. Travis Jones, making his first start of the season, followed with an RBI single to left and the Longhorns lead 3-0 after two.
Righthander Connor Mayes blanked the Rebels through four innings before he was lifted in the fifth after issuing a leadoff walk. Senior Travis Duke (1-0) entered in relief and made quick work of the UNLV offense, thanks in part to the arm of catcher Tres Barrera who nabbed Connor Esmay at second attempting to steal.
The Longhorns pushed across to more in the bottom of the frame. Zane Gurwitz led off the inning with a double to left-center, Mathis then walked before Barrera and Kacy Clemens added RBI singles to make it 5-0.
In the seventh, righthander Morgan Cooper came on to pitch for Texas in what was his first appearance since June 21, 2014 after missing all of last season with Tommy John surgery. He sat down the side in order with two strikeouts and a foul popup.
The teams exchanged zeroes in the eighth and freshman Chase Shugart finished out the contest with an eight-pitch ninth inning.
Texas returns to action on Thursday at 6 p.m. with the first of four games against Stanford at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Notes: In the bottom of the fifth, UNLV brought on freshman RHP Chase Maddux—son of Major League Baseball Hall of Famer, Greg—to face Texas freshman Kody Clemens, son of former big leaguer Roger Clemens…opposing runners are now 0-for-2 in thefts with Barrera behind the plate…Mathis had reached base in six straight plate appearances (two home runs, a double, three walks) before he was retired in the seventh.
