SERIES NOTES
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—The Longhorns went 2-2 last week and took their second Big 12 series of the season over the weekend, winning two of three from Kansas State in Manhattan…the Longhorns outscored the Wildcats 20-11 in the series, including a 12-5 victory on Saturday…Texas hit six homers in the three games, two off the bat of Kody Clemens…Kacy and Kody Clemens both went deep on Friday night and Kacy went 4-for-5 in that game…Kody and Travis Jones then went back-to-back on Saturday…Mathis also hit his team-leading fifth long ball in Saturday's game…Zane Gurwitz had a career day on Saturday as well, going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and four RBI…he also hit his first home run of the season in the ninth inning on Sunday to pull the Longhorns to within one.
A LOOK AT THE COUGARS—Houston is coming off a 2-2 week that included a series win over American Athletic Conference foe UCF…the Cougars are led by their pitching staff which has compiled a 2.21 team ERA while striking out 266 and walking 55 in 273 innings…opponents are hitting .212 against the Cougar pitchers…Cougar freshman Joe Daviswas named AAC Player of the Week and leads his squad with a .371 average and 32 RBI.
NEXT UP—Texas hosts Kansas over the weekend in a three-game Big 12 Conference series beginning on Friday.
ANOTHER HALL HONOR—On March 31, the National College Baseball Hall of Fame announced that Augie Garrido will be a part of the 2016 induction class as the winningest coach in collegiate baseball history…on January 8, he was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame, giving the Longhorns program four ABCA Hall of Famers, as he joined Billy Disch (inducted in 1966), Bibb Falk (1968) and Cliff Gustafson (1992).
THE DUKE—On April 2 at Oklahoma, left-handed reliever Travis Duke made his 100th career appearance…he has made four apps since and currently sits at No. 5 among Texas pitchers all-time behind Huston Street (105), Randy Boone (106), J. Brent Cox (106) and Austin Wood (118).
GURWITZ WEEKEND—Zane Gurwitz went 7-for-12 (.583)over the weekend against K-State…he ripped a double, triple and his first homer of the year…had a four-RBI game on Saturday that included a two-out, bases-loaded triple…overall on the season, Gurwitz is now 4-for-4 with the bases loaded and 14-for-39 (.359) with runners in scoring position.
FRESH UNDER PRESSURE—Freshman Kody Clemens is 11-for-30 (.367) with runners in scoring position, 3-for-6 (.500) with the bases loaded and 16-for-50 (.320) with runners on base…he's also 12-for-35 (.343) with two outs…he's tied for the team-lead with 9 two-out RBI
OUTHIT 'EM—Texas has outhit its opponent 19 times this season, going 12-7 in those games…Texas is 1-11 when outhit by its opponent, picking up its only win on April 2 at OU.
A FAMILY AFFAIR—Familiar last names pepper the Longhorns roster as Kacy Clemens was joined by his brother, Kody, this season…their father, Roger, is a UT and MLB great…Nick Kennedy joined his brother, Ben, on the team this season…Kaleb Denny's father, David, also played at UT and Tate Shaw's brother, Collin. was on the Longhorns roster last season.
CORNERSTONES—Juniors Tres Barrera and Zane Gurwitz are the only two Longhorns to start every game for Texas…Barrera has made starts at catcher (12), third base (12), designated hitter (6) and first base (2) while Gurwitz has started in centerfield (20) and at second base (12)…Kody Clemens has played in all 32, with 31 starts.
NINE TO FIVE—On the season, the Longhorns have been outscored 25-7 in the ninth inning…on the flipside, Texas has outscored its opponents 19-3 in the fifth inning…overall, the Longhorns have outscored their opponents 154-131 in total.
MILESTONE TRACKER—With his win on February 20 vs. UNLV, Garrido reached 800 career victories as head coach of the Longhorns…he is 36 wins away from 2,000 in his collegiate career…Garrido already has the most victories all-time for any NCAA head baseball coach.
