Baseball comes up short in 3-2 loss to Houston in Sugar Land

The Longhorns rebounded from a 2-0 hole but fell 3-2 to the Cougars.
SUGAR LAND, Texas—Despite tying up the ballgame late, the Longhorns eventually fell 3-2 to Houston on Tuesday night at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas.
After a pair of scoreless innings, starter Connor Mayes got into trouble in the third. Three consecutive singles—including a bunt single up the first base line—gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Then, with the bases loaded after a walk, a single through the left side plated the second Houston run of the ballgame.
With the Cougars up 2-0 with just one out in the third, freshman Beau Ridgeway entered in relief. The right-hander got a fly ball to left field that Travis Jones reeled in. When the Cougar baserunner broke for home, Jones fired a laser to to the plate to hose him by several feet, ending the inning and limiting the damage. The outfield assist was Jones' team-best third of the season.
The Longhorns chipped away at their deficit in the fifth. Patrick Mathis opened the frame with the first Texas hit of the ballgame, a single through the left side. After Kacy Clemens moved him into scoring position, Zane Gurwitz came through with a one-out double to make it 2-1.
Another defensive highlight for Texas came in the top half of the sixth when, with two outs, Tyler Rand made a diving grab in left-center to close out the inning.
With one out in the Longhorns' sixth, Kody Clemens and Travis Jones hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners.
Tres Barrera followed with a squeeze bunt, one that the Cougars could not record an out on as Kody Clemens raced home to tie the game at 2-2.
Houston recaptured its lead the following inning, however, after a bunt single, a walk and another base hit made it 3-2.
Although Kacy Clemens belted a ball to the warning track in the ninth, the Longhorns could not complete another comeback and dropped the midweek matchup.
Texas hosts Kansas this weekend in a three-game Big 12 Conference series set at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
