Ty Culbreth led the Longhorns to the series win, picking up his seventh win of the year and second career complete game.
AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Baseball overpowered visiting Kansas on a rainy Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, defeating the Jayhawks 12-2 in a game shortened by the 10-run rule. The win gave the Longhorns (16-20, 7-5 Big 12) their third Big 12 Conference series win of the year.
The Longhorns took advantage of some KU (14-20, 3-8 Big 12) miscues early and got out to an insurmountable lead.
Travis Jones led off the Texas half of the first with a walk. After a Tres Barrera walk, Kacy Clemens singled to plate Jones and give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead. Barrera then scored on a wild pitch before a Zane Gurwitz single scored Clemens and made it 3-0 after the first.
After Kansas got one back in the second off senior starter Ty Culbreth, the Longhorns responded with a four-run third inning to put the game out of reach. Kacy Clemens opened the frame with a double and Patrick Mathis followed with a walk. The Jayhawks then issued a passed ball and two wild pitches to plate both runners and give Texas a 5-1 advantage. A Tyler Rand single and a Jones bunt pushed the lead to 7-1.
The Longhorns added two in the fourth thanks to a Mathis single and a groundout and then added another pair of runs in the fifth when Jones drove a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for his third blast of the season, upping the Longhorns lead to 11-2.
Culbreth (7-2) limited the Jayhawks offense to just two runs over six innings of work. Despite loading the bases in the sixth, the lefthander induced a 1-2-3 double play and got a groundout to keep the lead as is.
The senior retired the Jayhawks side in order in the seventh, striking out the last two batters he faced in what would be the final inning of the ballgame.
In the bottom of the frame, KU reliever Ryan Ralston issued three consecutive free passes to Rand, Jones and Kody Clemens. After a strikeout gave Kansas one out in the inning, Kacy Clemens picked up his third walk of the day (and his second RBI) to give the Longhorns a 10-run lead and seal the victory.
Culbreth finished with seven innings of work, allowing eight hits, two runs and two walks while striking out eight en route to his second career complete game.
Texas returns to action on Tuesday with a nonconference matchup against UT Rio Grande Valley.
