The Longhorns fell behind early to UT Rio Grande Valley but pounded out 10 hits and stole four bags in the victory.
AUSTIN, Texas—Although it found itself in an early 3-0 hole, Texas Baseball came back to defeat UT Rio Grande Valley by a 7-5 final on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Behind by three in the third, the Longhorns (17-20) began mounting their comeback in the bottom half of the frame. After Tyler Rand walked and stole second—his first of two steals on the night—Kody Clemens hit a one-out double to left-center to plate Rand and make it 3-1.
UT RGV picked up another run in the fourth to make it 4-1, but the Texas offense was not finished. With two down in the inning, Zane Gurwitz singled and Bret Boswell followed with a triple to cut the Longhorns deficit to two. A batter later, Boswell came home on the first of three wild pitches in the ballgame to pull the Longhorns to within one at 4-3.
the game.
After Beau Ridgeway (1-0) retired the Vaqueros side in the fifth, Tres Barrera opened the home half of the inning with a double to left. Two batters later, Joe Baker drove a single up the middle to put runners on the corners for Texas.
With Patrick Mathis at the plate, both baserunners advanced on a passed ball with Barrera scoring to tie up the ballgame, 4-4. With Mathis still up, the UT RGV pitcher unleased a wild pitch and then a second wild pitch to walk Mathis and allow Joe Baker to score, giving the Longhorns a 5-4 lead.
In the sixth, the Longhorns added some insurance. Boswell opened the inning with a double to center and moved to third on a bunt single by Rand. Travis Jones then followed with an RBI sacrifice bunt to give the Longhorns a 6-4 cushion.
That extra run would prove important as Vaqueros first baseman Correy Davis led off the visitors seventh with a solo homer off of Nolan Kingham to make it 6-5.
Texas picked up its seventh and final run in the eighth inning when, with two outs, Kody Clemens drove a 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall for his fourth homer of the season.
Up two, the Longhorns called upon freshman Chase Shugart to close it out and the righthander retired the Vaqueros in order for his third save of the year.
The Longhorns head to Lubbock, Texas, this weekend for a three-game series against Big 12 Conference leaders Texas Tech beginning Friday.
