SERIES NOTES
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—The Longhorns were swept for the second straight Big 12 Conference series last weekend (May 6-8) at West Virginia…Texas did not play last week as the team took final exams…the Longhorns have lost six of seven since defeating Texas State on April 26 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field…the Longhorns offense is paced by Patrick Mathis who is hitting at a .317 clip for the year and Zane Gurwitz who has upped his average to .294.
A LOOK AT THE BOBCATS—Texas State dropped two of three on the road at Arkansas State last weekend…the Bobcats have six players batting over .300 for the year, incuding Dylan Paul who is batting at a .354 clip is 39 games (18 starts)…three Bobcats have started every game for Texas State: Jonathan Ortega, Granger Studdard and Luke Sherley.
NEXT UP—Texas will play its final regular season series at home against Baylor beginning Thursday and concluding Saturday.
ZANE ON FIRE—Zane Gurwitz has been on a tear…in 19 games since April 8 at Kansas State, Gurwitz has hit .338 (23-for-68) with five homers and 24 RBI…his 21 RBI in Big 12 Conference games is tied for the most in the league…had just 8 RBI in his first 29 games…he hit two homers in the three-game series at West Virginia…he took over the team lead in RBI with 32 on the year.
CORNERSTONES—Juniors Tres Barrera and Zane Gurwitz are the only two Longhorns to start every game for Texas…Barrera has made starts at catcher (24), third base (13), designated hitter (7), first base (3) and made his first career start at second base last Tuesday…Gurwitz has started in centerfield (30) and at second base (18)…Kody Clemens has played in all 48, with 47 starts.
ROUGH STRETCH—After registering quality starts in six of his first seven starts, senior LHP Ty Culbreth lasted a season-worst 4.1 IP on Saturday at WVU…in his last 5 outings, he has allowed 22 runs (18 ER) in 30 innings of work…in his first six starts, allowed just 15 runs (12 ER) over 46.2 IP.
CONFERENCE HONORS—After hitting .476 (7-for-15) in four games from April 18-24, shortstop Joe Baker was named Big 12 Player of the Week on April 25…the sophomore hit safely in every game during the week, including a 4-for-4 effort on Sunday in the Longhorns 17-1 rout of Texas Tech…Baker hit 2 doubles and a home run in the ballgame en route to a 6-RBI day…Baker also picked up 2 walks and a stolen base, his sixth of the year…he slugged .800 and compiled a .529 on-base percentage…it is the first conference weekly award of Baker's career and the third honor for a Longhorn this season after Ty Culbreth (Pitcher, 2/29) and Tres Barrera (Player, 3/28).
OUTHIT 'EM—Texas has outhit its opponent 24 times this season, going 17-7 in those games…Texas is 2-19 when outhit by its opponent.
