SERIES NOTES
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—The Longhorns are coming off their first Big 12 Conference series sweep of the season…after taking 2 of 3 from No. 10 Texas Tech, the Longhorns were swept in the three-game set by then-No. 23 Oklahoma State at home…it is just the second Big 12 series loss of the year for the Longhorns…in all, Texas allowed 6 unearned runs over the weekend thanks to 5 errors…the Longhorns offense was shut out in game one, 3-0…Travis Jones collected three of the five Texas hits in the ballgame…Morgan Cooper cruised through much of the ballgame, allowing just one run (unearned) over 6 innings…Ty Culbreth failed to get through 6 innings in game two for the first time since his season debut…the Longhorns rallied in game three from 4 runs down but a 4-run Cowboy 8th ended the comeback bid.
A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS—Prairie View A&M is in the midst of a five-game losing skid after being swept by Grambling State…the Panther offense is led by Darrien Williams' .351 batting average…Shannon Washington has compiled a .337 average with 30 RBI so far this year.
NEXT UP—Texas heads to Morgantown, W.Va., this weekend for a three-game Big 12 Conference series against the West Virginia Mountaineers…WVU is currently 23-19 on the season and 8-9 in the Big 12, sitting in fifth place, one spot behind the Longhorns.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK—After hitting .476 (7-for-15) in four games from April 18-24, shortstop Joe Baker was named Big 12 Player of the Week on April 25…the sophomore hit safely in every game during the week, including a 4-for-4 effort on Sunday in the Longhorns 17-1 rout of Texas Tech…Baker hit 2 doubles and a home run in the ballgame en route to a 6-RBI day…Baker also picked up 2 walks and a stolen base, his sixth of the year…he slugged .800 and compiled a .529 on-base percentage…it is the first conference weekly award of Baker's career and the third honor for a Longhorn this season after Ty Culbreth (Pitcher, 2/29) and Tres Barrera (Player, 3/28).
THE DUKE—On April 2 at Oklahoma, left-handed reliever Travis Duke made his 100th career appearance…he has made nine apps since and currently sits tied at No. 2 among Texas pitchers all-time, trailing Austin Wood (118) by nine outings.
ANOTHER HALL HONOR—On March 31, the National College Baseball Hall of Fame (located in Lubbock) announced that Augie Garrido will be a part of the 2016 induction class as the winningest coach in collegiate baseball history…on January 8, he was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame, giving the Longhorns program four ABCA Hall of Famers, as he joined Billy Disch (inducted in 1966), Bibb Falk (1968) and Cliff Gustafson (1992).
MR. CONSISTENCY—Senior LHP Ty Culbreth failed to make it out of the sixth inning on Saturday vs. OSU for the first time since his season debut…on April 15 vs. Kansas, pitched his second career complete game, a 7-inning effort…has just four starts that are not considered "quality starts" (6-IP, 3-ER or fewer)…the first came in his first outing of the season when he went 5 innings and allowed 1 earned run…the other two non-quality starts came in his wins over K-State and Texas Tech when he went 7 innings and allowed 4 earned runs…his last outing vs. Oklahoma Sttate lasted just 5.2 innings…his outing on February 27 vs. Stanford (8-IP, 2-H, 0-R/ER, 0-BB, 12-SO) earned him Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors…on the season, Culbreth has struck out 62 batters and walked just 14…his 8 wins lead the Big 12.
CORNERSTONES—Juniors Tres Barrera and Zane Gurwitz are the only two Longhorns to start every game for Texas…Barrera has made starts at catcher (22), third base (13), designated hitter (6) and first base (3) while Gurwitz has started in centerfield (26) and at second base (18)…Kody Clemens has played in all 44, with 43 starts.
NINE TO FIVE—On the season, the Longhorns have been outscored 31-9 in the ninth inning…on the flipside, Texas has outscored its opponents 27-11 in the fifth…overall, the Longhorns have outscored their opponents 231-195 in total.
MILESTONE TRACKER—With his win on February 20 vs. UNLV, Garrido reached 800 career victories as head coach of the Longhorns…he is 30 wins away from 2,000 in his collegiate career…Garrido already has the most victories all-time for any NCAA head baseball coach.
