AUSTIN, Texas – No. 10 Texas Baseball blasted Baylor 20-1 to open the series against the Bears on Friday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (28-13, 7-6) were relentless at the plate, hammering out 20 hits, including five home runs and four doubles.
Douglas Hodo III set the table at the top of the Longhorns order, going 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Ivan Melendez went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and one run scored. Silas Ardoin went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer and Skyler Messinger was 2-for-3 with a homer, one RBI and three runs scored. Trey Faltine went 3-for-5 with a double and a career-high five RBI.
Pete Hansen pitched five innings and allowed just one run on five hits to pick up the win and improve to 7-1 this season. With the big lead, the Longhorns were able to get Hansen out of the game after throwing just 73 pitches.
Faltine gave the Longhorns a 3-0 lead in the second inning, clearing the bases with a bases-loaded two-out double to left field. Murphy Stehly walked, Messinger singled and Dylan Campbell walked to load the bases.
Baylor got a run back in the third on three-straight one-out singles off of Hansen to make the score 3-1. That would be the only run the Bears would have in the game.
Texas came right back in the bottom of the third, as Ardoin launched a three-run homer to extend the Longhorns lead to 6-1.
The Longhorns offense kept it up in the fourth, exploding for seven runs on eight hits and batting around in the inning. The first six hitters of the inning all got hits, starting with a single by Campbell and a double by Mitchell Daly. Faltine drove both of them in with a two-run single to left. Hodo kept things going with a single before Austin Todd drove in another run with an RBI single to left center.
Melendez then blasted his 18th homer of the season, a two-run shot to dead center. After a pitching change, Stehly singled and Messinger walked before Campbell drove them in with an RBI double to make the score 13-1.
Texas scored three more on three hits in the fifth inning to extend the lead out to 16-1. Faltine singled and Hodo drove him in with a double to left-center. After a walk by Todd, Melendez drove in another run with an RBI single. The final run of the inning came home on a sacrifice fly by Stehly.
The Longhorns did not let up, hitting homers in the sixth and seventh innings to surpass the 20-run mark in a game for the first time since 2010. Messinger hit a solo homer in the sixth and Hodo hit a solo homer in the seventh. Kimble Schuessler, who caught the final four innings, hit his first career homer, a two-run blast in the seventh.
Zane Morehouse pitched three stellar innings out of the bullpen, striking out three batters and not allowing a run. Daniel Blair finished off the game with a perfect ninth inning with three groundouts.
The Longhorns will look to clinch the series over the Bears on Saturday at 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
