EDINBURG, Texas – No. 10 Texas Baseball picked up a 7-2 win over UTRGV on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The Longhorns (31-13) made their first trip to the Rio Grande Valley in 51 years and played in front of a UTRGV record crowd of 6,418.
Zane Morehouse made his first career start for the Longhorns and pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and faced the minimum through the first five frames. He finished with six strikeouts and picked up his first win as a Longhorn
Ivan Melendez went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Longhorns offensively, while Skyler Messinger was 2-for-4 with two doubles and one run scored.
The Longhorns scored the first run of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Messinger hit a one-out double and Kimble Schuessler drove him in with an RBI single up the middle.
Texas added four more runs in the fourth on a slew of free passes by UTRGV pitching. Schuessler walked, Mitchell Daly was hit by a pitch and Trey Faltine walked to load the bases. Douglas Hodo III drove in a run with a bases loaded walk before an error allowed another run to score. Melendez then drove in two runs with a single through the left side of the infield to make the score 5-0.
The Vaqueros got their first hits and run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Dylan Campbell was able to help limit the damage by making a couple of strong throws from the outfield to eliminate runners on the bases.
The Longhorns scratched out two more runs in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 7-1. The first run of the inning scored on an error before Melendez hit another RBI single to drive in Faltine.
Lebarron Johnson Jr. pitched a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout, while Travis Sthele pitched 1 2/3 in relief. Aaron Nixon, a McAllen native, recorded the final out of the ballgame.
The victory also marked the 400th career win for head coach David Pierce, whose overall record is now 400-216 in his 11th season as a head coach.
