No. 7 Baseball cruises to win against UTRGV, 13-5

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 7 Texas Baseball cruised to a 13-5 win against UTRGV on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (22-9) had 17 hits, including two doubles and three homers.
Skyler Messinger had an incredible night at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Ivan Melendez also had a great night going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI.
Texas had three homers against UTRGV starting with Murphy Stehly who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one home run. Mitchell Daly went 1-for-4 with two runs and a two-run home run.
Justin Eckhardt started and threw 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts, allowing five runs on nine hits.
Jared Southard, Luke Harrison, Lebarron Johnson Jr. and Travis Sthele combined to pitch the final 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Combined they allowed just one hit and no free passes.
The Longhorns batted around in the first to get the lead with a home run led by Stehly to drive in Douglas Hodo III, followed by an RBI double by Trey Faltine to score Ivan Melendez. Messinger hit a single up the middle driving in Faltine, followed by a two-run homer hit by Daly to bring the score 6-0.
In the third inning, Dylan Campbell reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on an error, and was then brought in on an RBI single from Stehly. Melendez extended the Texas lead to 8-1 with a single to bring Hodo across home plate.
Messinger added a run to the scoreboard in the fourth with an RBI double to left field to score Austin Todd.
The Longhorns scored a run in the fifth when Hodo was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, then ran home from an RBI single by Melendez.
Hodo got his first hit of the night with a three-run homer over left field to score Daly and Messinger to bring the score to 13-5.
Texas continues its five-game homestand by hosting No. 23 TCU this weekend at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
