The Longhorns used an eight-run sixth to overtake the Roadrunners.
AUSTIN, Texas—Led by a three-hit, four-RBI effort from junior Tres Barrera, the Texas baseball team erupted for 11 runs in its Tuesday night win over UTSA in what was the Longhorns' final game before opening conference play this weekend.
Barrera opened the game's scoring in the first inning, driving in left fielder Travis Jones from third base to make it 1-0.
UTSA tied it up in the second off freshman Nick Kennedy, who was making his first career start as the Longhorns utilized a starter-by-committee approach. The Longhorns quickly answered with a Brady Harlan sacrifice fly to regain the one-run advantage in their half of the inning but once again UTSA answered to knot the game at 2-2.
After swapping zeroes in the fifth, the Longhorns broke the game open in the sixth.
Texas drew three straight walks to open the frame and load the bases for Zane Gurwitz. Gurwitz, who was making his first career start at second base, drove a 2-1 pitch off the UTSA first baseman for an infield single to give the Longhorns the 3-2 lead.
The Roadrunner pitching followed with back-to-back bases loaded walks to make it 5-2 and Kody Clemens, who started at shortstop for the first time, ripped a ground ball in the hole to push the Texas lead to 6-2.
With bases loaded and no outs, Barrera continued to do damage against UTSA, singling through the left side to drive in two and make it 8-2 in favor of Texas.
After an RBI groundout from Patrick Mathis sent Harlan across the plate, Kaleb Denny rounded out the scoring for the inning with a single to right to give the Longhorns a 10-2 lead.
Leading off the eighth inning, Barrera—the Longhorns' home run leader last season—crushed his first long ball of the year over the left field fence for the final run of the game.
The Longhorns employed seven pitchers in the game, including lefthander Josh Sawyer who made his first appearance since the season opener and sat down the side in order with two strikeouts.
Freshman Nolan Kingham picked up the win for Texas, throwing two innings and allowing just one hit while fanning a pair.
The Longhorns open Big 12 Conference play this weekend as No. 6 TCU comes to town for a three-game set beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.
