SERIES NOTES
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—The Longhorns are coming off a 3-1 week that featured a blowout win over UTSA on Tuesday and a series win over then-No. 6 TCU over the weekend…the Longhorns took game one over TCU 4-3 and shut out the Horned Frogs 2-0 on Friday…it was the first time TCU has been shut out in the regular season since March 11, 2013 at Rice…the Longhorns did not make an error in either of the first two games of the series, both wins, but made three errors in the loss.
A LOOK AT THE CARDINALS—Lamar enters Tuesday night's matchup having won six straight thanks to back-to-back three-game sweeps of Southland Conference foes Central Arkansas and New Orleans…Lamar's last loss came at home vs. then-No. 19/20 Houston, who the Longhorns will face off against later this season…the Cardinal offense is led by Bryndan Arredondo who has hit .378 (31-of-82) so far this season…LU's home run leader is Reid Russell with eight long balls this season…RHP Fernando Martinez has made two starts…his last appearance came vs. Houston…Texas and Lamar have not met since 2003.
NEXT UP—Texas travels to Norman, Okla. this weekend for a three-game set at Oklahoma…the Sooners are coming off a sweep at the hands of Texas Tech and were outscored 24-8…OU has a Tuesday night game against Arkansas-Little Rock before the series vs. Texas begins.
FRESH INFIELD—On Tuesday night vs. UTSA, the Longhorns went with a new-look infield that featured Tres Barrera at third, Kody Clemens at shortstop, Zane Gurwitz at second base and Kacy Clemens at first…this infield remained the same through the weekend series and has not yet made an error…Barrera had played primarily catcher so far this season while Kody Clemens was a mainstay at third and Gurwitz was the starting center fielder…the Longhorns have played just four errorless games so far this season, two of which came this weekend.
TRES JONRÓNES—After going homerless in his first 19 games this season, last year's team leader in long balls, Tres Barrera, hit three homers in a four-game span beginning on Tuesday night…his first big fly of the season came on Tuesday…he added his second homer on Friday to push the Texas lead over TCU to 2-0 and his final home run tied Saturday's ballgame…he finished the week with 7 RBI…his .400/.438/1.000 week earned him Big 12 Player of the Week honors, the second weekly award of his career after earning a Newcomer of the Week nod during his freshman season.
JONESING TO REACH—Travis Jones has reached base safely in all 18 games he has played so far this season, the longest streak of any Longhorn…he has led off and played left field in the last 13 games for Texas…Jones also leads the team with four bunt singles.
UNDER PRESSURE—Freshman Kody Clemens is now batting .333 (14-for-42) with runners on base and is 3-for-6 with the bases loaded…he's 11-for-26 (.423) with runners in scoring position and 8-for-27 (.296) with 9 RBI with two outs.
BASES JUICED—The Longhorns are now 15-for-28 (.536) with the bases loaded on the season including a 3-for-3 effort on Tuesday vs. UTSA…Zane Gurwitz is now 3-for-3 on the season with them loaded while Kacy Clemens is 2-for-2 with the bags full and Bret Boswell and Tres Barrera are each 2-for-3 on the year.
OUTHIT 'EM—Texas has outhit its opponent 17 times this season, going 11-6 in those games…in both wins over the weekend, the Longhorns collected more hits than TCU but were edged 14-11 in Saturday's series finale…Texas is now 0-6 when outhit by its opponent.
MO' COOP—Redshirt sophomore Morgan Cooper slid into the Friday starter slot last weekend after making three Tuesday night starts.
A FAMILY AFFAIR—Familiar last names pepper the Longhorns roster as Kacy Clemens was joined by his brother, Kody, this season…their father, Roger, is a UT and MLB great…Nick Kennedy joined his brother, Ben, on the team this season…Kaleb Denny's father, David, also played at UT and Tate Shaw's brother, Collin. was on the Longhorns roster last season.
MILESTONE TRACKER—With his win on February 20 vs. UNLV, Garrido reached 800 career victories as head coach of the Longhorns…he is 39 wins away from 2,000 in his collegiate career.
