AUSTIN, Texas—Thirteen hits by the Lamar offense proved too much for Texas Baseball on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field as the Longhorns (11-14) fell, 4-2, to the Cardinals (17-7) in a nonconference matchup.
Lamar picked up its first runs of the game in the second inning when it put up a crooked number on righthander Nolan Kingham. After Kingham got two quick outs, the freshman gave up five straight hits to make it 2-0. The final out of the frame came on the final single when Travis Jones hosed a Cardinal baserunner at the plate attempting to score for his second outfield assist of the year.
The Longhorns cut their deficit in half in the third when Zane Gurwitz came home on a safety squeeze by Kody Clemens and three innings later, Texas drew even.
With one out in the sixth, junior Kacy Clemens singled up the middle and, after a groundout moved him to second, scored on a two-out single off the bat of Michael Cantu.
Five Longhorns relievers—Blake Wellmann, Eric Dunbar, Travis Duke and Chase Shugart—combined for six scoreless frames out of the bullpen, but Lamar went ahead for good in the ninth off Connor Mayes (0-3).
The Cardinals led off the ninth with an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt, the Longhorns intentionally walked Stijn van der Meer to set up a force play, but Jake Nash followed with an RBI single to center that eventually plated two after Tyler Rand could not field it cleanly.
Bret Boswell collected two hits in the game for the Longhorns and Jones extended his on base streak to 19 games with a leadoff walk in the first. Dunbar collected three strikeouts while Wellmann, Duke and Shugart fanned one apiece. None of the four allowed a walk. The Longhorns dropped to 0-7 when outhit by their opponent.
Texas heads to Norman, Okla., this weekend for a three-game Big 12 Conference series at Oklahoma University.
