With the loss, the Longhorns drop to 5-5 in Big 12 Conference action.
AUSTIN, Texas—Despite an early 3-0 lead, Texas Baseball fell 11-5 to the visiting Kansas Jayhawks in game one of Friday night's doubleheader.
Kacy Clemens drove in the first run of the ballgame in the first inning with his first career triple. The junior drove one into the gap in left-center to score Travis Jones and give the Longhorns a 1-0 advantage.
After missing 14 games with a stress fracture in his leg, sophomore Joe Baker took the first pitch he saw up the middle for a base hit to lead off the second. Two batters later, Michael Cantu drove a line drive to left to score Baker and push the Longhorns lead to 2-0. After Tyler Rand stretched a base hit into a double, Jones followed with a sacrifice fly and the Longhorns held a 3-0 lead.
In the top half of the third, however, KU answered. With two on, Kansas third baseman Ryan Pidhaichuk hit a double to pull the Jayhawks to within one.
In the fourth, KU took its first lead of the ballgame thanks to a dropped fly ball to right field.
Down 4-3, the Longhorns stormed back in the bottom half of the inning to tie it and eventually regain the lead.
Mathis opened the home half with a double before Rand added his second "hustle double" of the evening to make it 4-4. Kody Clemens continued to hit well with two outs and runners on, driving an 0-1 pitch to right field to plate Rand and make it 5-4 in favor of the Longhorns.
Kansas loaded the bases on three singles in the fifth and with two down after a diving grab by Zane Gurwitz, the KU left fielder Devin Foyle hit a sharp grounder down the left-field line to clear the bases and put the Jayhawks back on top, 7-5.
The Jayhawks added another run in the seventh off Eric Dunbar thanks to a walk and a pair of singles. The earned run was the first allowed by Dunbar in his career and came in his fifth outing as a Longhorn.
KU added to its lead with a three-spot in the eighth and the Longhorns could not muster up a comeback.
Game two is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.
