The Longhorns belted three homers and 14 hits to win the series, two games to one.
LUBBOCK, Texas—For the second straight weekend, the Longhorns finished out their Big 12 series by run-ruling the opposition. Texas Baseball (19-21, 9-6 Big 12) downed No. 11 Texas Tech 17-1 on Sunday afternoon to take the series two games to one in Lubbock.
The Longhorns offense got on the Red Raiders (31-12, 12-3 Big 12) early and did not relent. Freshman Tyler Rand opened the scoring for Texas in the second inning with his first career homer—a three-run blast to left—giving the Longhorns a 3-0 lead.
Texas did not stop there. Travis Jones led off the third with a hustle double and Kody Clemens followed with an RBI triple to push the lead to 4-0. After Tres Barrera and Kacy Clemens drew walks to load the bases, Joe Baker doubled down the left field line to score two and put the Longhorns ahead 6-0.
The Longhorns put up two more in the frame to lead 8-0 after three.
In the fourth, Baker got another bases loaded opportunity and delivered once again.
With Kody Clemens, Barrera and Kacy Clemens on the bases, Baker drove a 3-2 pitch to left-center for his second two-run double of the ballgame.
Patrick Mathis and Jake McKenzie also plated runs as part of the five-run fourth inning, giving Texas a commanding 13-0 advantage.
The Red Raiders got their first and only run of the game in the fifth thanks to a solo homer off starter Kyle Johnston (3-1). The right-hander finished with six innings of work, allowing just four hits and five walks while fanning six on the day.
In the seventh and final frame, the Horns padded their lead. With two outs and Kody Clemens on first, Baker took a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to make it 15-1 in favor of the Longhorns. Two batters later, Zane Gurwitz hit a bomb to left for his third long ball of the season to make it a resounding 17-1.
Chase Shugart came on in the seventh and retired the TTU side in order to seal the win.
Overall on the afternoon, Baker went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and six RBI while Mathis, Gurwitz and Rand added three RBI each.
The Big 12 series victory is the Longhorns fourth conference series win of the season and marks the Red Raiders' first conference series loss this year.
