The Longhorns fell 4-3 to the Sooners for their first Big 12 series loss.
NORMAN, Okla.—A walk-off single sent Texas Baseball to a 4-3 loss at the hands of Oklahoma in Sunday afternoon's series finale with the Sooners. The loss drops the Longhorns to 12-16 on the season and 3-3 in Big 12 Conference action.
Sooners shortstop Sheldon Neuse did the early damage off Kyle Johnston, taking a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to put Texas in an early 1-0 hole, but the Longhorns offense recovered in the third when Zane Gurwitz and Tyler Rand hit back-to-back doubles to make it 1-1.
In the fifth, with Michael Cantu and Gurwitz on, Rand came through once again, singling up the middle to give the Longhorns a 2-1 lead.
Texas pushed its lead to 3-1 in the sixth when, after Patrick Mathis tripled, Kaleb Denny lifted one to right field for a sacrifice, scoring Mathis.
After a walk and an error put two one for the Sooners in the sixth, Johnston was lifted in favor of Travis Duke who allowed a single down the left field line to tie the ballgame at 3-3.
Freshman Chase Shugart came on following the single and proceeded to shut the Sooners down for the next nine outs. The righthander did not allow a hit over three innings of work, walking two and striking out two.
In the ninth, the Longhorns made a couple of hard-hit outs but could not push across a run.
Sophomore Connor Mayes entered in the home half of the frame and put the go-ahead run on first with a free pass. After a sacrifice bunt put Alex Wise on second, Domenic DeRenzo popped one up behind first base that resulted in a double. The Longhorns intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases and the next Sooner batter hit a single to right to walk it off.
The Longhorns return to action on Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
