Baseball routs Sam Houston State, 12-3, behind Cooper

The Longhorns scored a season-most 12 runs on a season-high-tying 14 hits.
AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Baseball pounded out 14 hits behind a stellar start from right-hander Morgan Cooper in Tuesday night's 12-3 win over Sam Houston State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Making his second start of the season, Cooper (1-0) dominated through six innings of work against Sam Houston (5-9). After allowing two first-inning singles, the right-hander sat down 11 straight and 15 of his next 17 while fanning a career-high eight batters and walking none. The outing was Cooper's third since undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing all of the 2015 season.
Cooper wasn't the only star of the night however, as the Longhorns offense tied a season-high with 14 hits. Freshman Kody Clemens also added three hits in the game including his first career home run—a two-run opposite field blast to make it 4-0 in the fourth.
Kody and Kacy Clemens each drove in three runs on the day, as the elder Clemens ripped a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to right-center in the fifth to make it 8-0 in favor of the Longhorns.
Sophomore Joe Baker and junior Zane Gurwitz also racked up three hits apiece in the game, with Baker adding two RBI and Gurwitz driving in a run of his own in the seventh.
The Bearkats got three runs back in the seventh off reliever Beau Ridgeway thanks to three hits, a sac fly and hit batter, but that would be all for the Sam Houston scoring.
The Longhorns' final runs came in the eighth when freshman Brady Harlan added a two-run single to make it 12-3 and freshman Chase Shugart shut the door in the ninth, striking out the side to end the game.
Texas (6-7) heads to California this weekend for its first road series of the year. The Longhorns are set to play three games against No. 19 UCLA beginning on Friday at 8 p.m. CT.
