Tres Barrera hit his third homer in four games and the Longhorns claimed the series victory, two games to one.
AUSTIN, Texas—Despite a game-tying two-run homer from Tres Barrera in the fifth inning, the Longhorns fell 9-5 to No. 6 TCU in Saturday's series finale at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. After wins over the Horned Frogs (18-5, 3-2 Big 12) on Thursday and Friday, Texas (11-13, 2-1 Big 12) claimed its first Big 12 Conference series victory of the season.
Both teams' starters were chased early in the game. After TCU picked up its first run on a sacrifice fly in the second, the Longhorns bounced back for three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Patrick Mathis opened the frame with a single and, after a sacrifice bunt moved him to second, scored on a Kaleb Denny shot up the middle to draw the game even at 1-1. Michael Cantu and Zane Gurwitz followed with singles to plate another run before Kody Clemens drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1 in favor of the Longhorns.
TCU answered back in the third thanks to three hits and a walk off Kyle Johnston. With the score 3-2, the sophomore was lifted in favor of Travis Duke, who got the first batter on a sacrifice fly to tie it, 3-3, and got another fly to end the inning.
The Horned Frogs then picked up a run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to give themselves a 5-3 advantage.
With Mathis on after singling, it was once again Barrera who came through for Texas. Having gone homerless in his first 19 games this season, Barrera clocked his third home run in four games to draw the game even at 5-5.
The tie would be short-lived, however, as TCU put up a three-spot the following inning and added one more in the ninth to make it 9-5 and put the game out of reach of the Longhorns.
Every Texas starter reached base in the game, with Clemens, Cantu and Gurwitz garnering two hits each and Travis Jones extending his reached base streak to 18 games.
The Longhorns return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night with a 6 p.m. game against Lamar before heading to Oklahoma for a three-game set against the Sooners beginning Friday.
