AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Baseball let a seven-run lead slip late against No. 12 California and the Longhorns fell 10-7 in 11 innings at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.
Texas received a quality start out of righthander Connor Mayes, who kept the Bears off the board in six innings of work. The sophomore, who did not factor into the decision, allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five on the day.
The Longhorns offense came out hot against Cal starter Matt Ladrech. After Tres Barrera doubled to lead off the second, Michael Cantu ripped a one-out single down the line to score him and put Texas up 1-0.
Kody Clemens drove in another run in the fourth to score Bret Boswell, but the Longhorns broke the game open in a five-run fifth inning.
After Zane Gurwitz reached, Boswell added and RBI triple. Barrera walked to put runners on the corners for Kacy Clemens and the junior first baseman delivered. Clemens crushed a 2-1 offering over the right field fence for his second home run of the series to put Texas up 6-0.
Barrera the added a sac fly in the seventh to make it 7-0 but in the eighth inning, California began its comeback.
A two-out two-run single off the bat of Cal's Brian Celsi made it 7-2 and chased Texas reliever Nick Kennedy. Fellow freshman Chase Shugart entered and picked up the final out of the eighth, maintaining the Longhorns lead and sending the game into the ninth.
California opened with back-to-back singles off Shugart in the ninth. The righty then proceeded to get the next two batters on a fly out and line out but from there it unraveled for Texas.
The Bears plated four thanks to run-scoring singles and scored the tying run when a throw was mishandled at first base by Clemens.
With that, the game was sent to extras. After the sides traded zeroes in the 10th, California took its first lead of the ballgame with a three-run 11th off relievers Jon Malmin and Travis Duke.
The Longhorns were unable to rally in their half of the 11th and Cal left Austin with a four-game series sweep.
