The Longhorns open their outdoor season by hosting the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday, March 6.
AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Track and Field program, fresh off sweeping the 2021 Big 12 Indoor conference titles last weekend in Lubbock, opens its Outdoor slate by hosting the Longhorn Invitational this Saturday, March 6, at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Saturday's meet will mark UT's first Outdoor Track and Field competition since the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships, an event Texas also hosted at Myers Stadium. That meet concluded on June 8, 2019 and this weekend's Longhorn Invitational is set to snap a 637-day absence from Outdoor competition for the Longhorns.
This weekend's field will include a number of fresh and familiar faces to the Texas faithful. Among those best known to Longhorn fans will be former All-Americans Elena Brucker (Shot Put, Discus), Serenity Douglas (200m), Kathryn Gillespie (1500m, 5000m), Steffin McCarter (Long Jump), John Rice (1500m/5000m) and O'Brien Wasome (Triple Jump), all of whom are still competing in the Burnt Orange and White.
In addition, several Longhorn alums will be in the field this weekend, including 2019 NCAA Outdoor heptathlon national champion Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler, who will be competing in the 100-meter hurdles and women's long jump. Wolf Mahler, a fellow former multis All-American at Texas, will be competing in the 110-meter hurdles and the men's long jump this weekend. Melissa Gonzalez, an All-American hurdler at UT and World Championships qualifier, will be racing in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday. Aldrich Bailey, an All-American sprinter at UT, will be competing in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Texas volunteer coaches Sha'Keela Saunders (200m, Long Jump) and Kori Carter (800m) will also be in action.
The 2021 Longhorn Invitational gets underway Saturday at 10 a.m. with action in the women's hammer throw, and concludes with the men's 5,000-meter run that is currently slated to start at 9:20 p.m. Fans will be allowed to attend in limited capacity.
