The Longhorns close out their regular season with a second trip to Fayetteville, Ark.
AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 9/4 Texas Track and Field program enters its final meet of the regular season this weekend, as the Longhorns head back to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 12-13.
Thus far in 2021, the Longhorns have produced 17 NCAA top-16 performances (8 men/7 women). Leading that group are NCAA leaders Tripp Piperi (men's shot put) and Leo Neugebauer (men's heptathlon). Yaseen Abdalla (No. 2 – 5000m) also holds a top-five mark for the Texas men. On the women's side, Julien Alfred (No. 2 – 60m), Chanel Brissett (No. 2 – 60m hurdles), Tara Davis (No. 4 – long jump) and Kynnedy Flannel (No. 4 – 200m; No. 6 – 60m) all hold top-five marks in the NCAA this year.
The current campaign has left a number of Longhorns' names scattered throughout the program's record book, with Tripp Piperi's shot-put record standing as the highlight of the season to date. Piperi threw the shot 21.74m/71-4 at last Saturday's Charlie Thomas Invitational to break Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser's five-year-old school record and move to No. 2 in NCAA history. He was named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for the second this season following his effort. In addition, Neugebauer moved up to No. 3 on Texas' top performers list and Graydon Morris became the No. 5 performer in the 3000m after winning the even in his collegiate indoor debut at the Wooo Pig Classic on Jan. 22. For the women, Kristine Blazevica's 4,057-point pentathlon last weekend moved her to No. 2 in school history, Davis' best jump of the year pushed her to No. 3 in the event, Kiana Lowery became the fourth-best weight thrower on UT record and Chanel Brissett tied for fifth in school history in the 60m hurdles.
The Tyson Invitational begins on Friday at the Randal Tyson Track Center with field competition at 11 a.m. CT and concludes Saturday afternoon with the 4x400-meter relays. The meet will stream live on SEC Network+ on both Friday and Saturday.
